Understanding Your Brain: The Models Behind NLK, and Why They Matter for Learning, Performance and Self-Doubt
Most of us were handed a quiet, unspoken story somewhere along the way: that the things we struggle with say something about who we are. That if reading was hard, we weren’t clever. If we froze in the exam or the meeting or the audition, we weren’t cut out for it. If the same fearful thought keeps circling — I’m not enough, there’s never enough, I can’t — then perhaps that’s simply true.
I want to offer you a gentler and, I think, far more accurate story. So much of what we call a learning problem, a performance block, or a limiting belief isn’t about capacity at all. It’s about a brain under stress — and a brain under stress behaves very differently from a brain that feels safe.
This is the heart of Neuro-Linguistic Kinesiology, or NLK. And to understand how it works, it helps to look at a few simple maps of the brain.
Maps, not territory
Before we go any further, one honest note. The brain models I’m about to share are simplifications. The brain is gloriously complex, and no tidy diagram fully captures what’s happening inside your skull. The kinesiologist Wendy Bennett, who developed NLK, is clear about this — she calls these models metaphors, useful ways of describing what might be going on rather than literal blueprints.
I find that freeing rather than discrediting. These are maps. And a good map doesn’t need to be the whole territory to help you find your way home.
The two sides: step-by-step and big-picture
The first map is the one you’ve probably heard of — the idea of a “left brain” and a “right brain.”
In this model, one side of the brain tends to work step by step. It loves logic, detail, sequence, language, analysis. It’s the part that learns something new by breaking it into pieces. The other side works more automatically and intuitively. It loves the big picture, rhythm, pattern, emotion, the felt sense of a thing. It’s the part that takes over once a skill becomes second nature.
We need both, working together and talking to each other. Think of learning to drive. At first every movement is deliberate and effortful — mirror, indicator, clutch, breathe — that’s the step-by-step side working hard. With practice, it becomes smooth and automatic, and you can hold a conversation while you do it. That’s the handover between the two, the thing that should happen freely.
When stress disrupts that conversation, a person can get a little “stuck” on one side. Stuck in step-by-step, everything stays effortful and slow, and never quite becomes automatic. Stuck in automatic, it’s hard to slow down, focus on detail, or stop and think. Neither is a flaw in the person. It’s a communication issue — and communication can be restored.
The brain that keeps you safe first
The second map is the one I reach for most often, because it explains so much about performance, anxiety and self-doubt.
Picture the brain in three broad layers. At the base sits the instinctual, survival part — fast, wordless, concerned with one thing only: am I safe? Above it sits the emotional, feeling part — the seat of memory, relationship, and the way feelings “charge” our experiences. And over the top sits the thinking part, the rational, creative, planning brain that handles language, reasoning and learning.
Here’s the crucial bit. These layers are ranked by priority, and survival always wins. When the survival or emotional layers sense threat — a real one, or simply the pressure of a hard exam, a difficult conversation, a memory of past failure — they take the wheel. And when they do, the thinking brain effectively goes offline.
This is why a bright child can read fluently at home and freeze on the page at school. Why a capable professional blanks in the interview. Why the words won’t come when it matters most. It isn’t a lack of ability. It’s a nervous system that has, with the best of intentions, decided this moment is unsafe and pulled resources away from thinking and toward protection.
Once you see it this way, performance anxiety and self-doubt stop looking like character flaws and start looking like what they are: a stress response, asking to be soothed.
The natural stages of learning
The third map is the gentlest of all. It describes learning as a natural journey through four stages — beginning with not even knowing what we don’t know, moving into that uncomfortable phase of being painfully aware of how much we can’t yet do, then into careful, conscious competence, and finally into effortless, automatic skill.
I love this map because it normalises the discomfort. That awkward middle stage, where you feel clumsy and exposed and convinced you’re failing? That’s not failure. That’s a completely ordinary part of learning anything worthwhile. Knowing that alone can take the shame out of struggling.
How NLK uses these maps to create change
So we have our maps. Here’s where the work becomes practical and, I think, quite beautiful.
NLK draws together two streams: kinesiology, with its gentle muscle monitoring and meridian work, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, with its understanding of how we process experience through our senses and our language. The bridge between them is muscle monitoring — a soft, respectful use of the body as a biofeedback tool, helping us notice where stress is sitting in the system.
From there, we work to ease that stress and gently restore the brain-body conversation. The toolkit is simple and kind: holding points on the forehead that calm the fight-or-flight response and bring blood and oxygen back to the thinking brain; cross-crawl and other bilateral movements that encourage both sides to talk to each other again; meridian and acupressure techniques; and visualisation work that softens the emotional “charge” on a memory or belief so it loses its grip.
Crucially, we don’t just talk about the change — we rehearse it in the body. A person might role-play the very thing they find hard — reading aloud, asking for what they want, walking into the room — before and after the balancing, so the nervous system gets to feel, in real time, that this is now safe and possible.

Beyond learning and performance, I’ve seen these gentle approaches offer real support in my own clinic for people living with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), and for those rebuilding balance, coordination and confidence in their body after surgery.
I want to be clear and honest here: this work sits alongside medical care, never in place of it, and it makes no claim to treat or cure. But FND, at its heart, is a condition of how the brain sends and receives signals rather than structural damage — and for many people, calming an overwhelmed nervous system and patiently re-establishing that brain-body communication can be a genuinely meaningful part of feeling more steady, more integrated, and more at home in themselves again. The same is true of recovery after surgery, where so much of the journey is about helping the body feel safe enough to find its balance once more.
